Tento restringir ao necessário a compra de revistas, utensílios e toda a parafernália que vocês conhecem tão bem quanto eu. Mas sou fraca quando vejo um tecido de que gosto. E tenho uma paixão por padrões com gatos...

I entirely agree with Jude about the huge consumes in craft world. I try hard to not overspend on magazines, gadgets and all the paraphernalia you know as well as me. But I am a weak woman when I see a beautiful fabric. And I'm crazy about cat prints...E ela também não resiste: Olá rapazes!!

Dou-me conta que passaram muitos dias e este blog tem estado negligenciado. Nao é que não me lembre dele e de quem o visita mas tenho andado focalizada na execução do quilt para o four seasons swap. Espero assim comportar-me como uma verdadeira tartaruga, devagar e seguramente, para acabar este quilt, até à data aprazada sem ter de fazer uma noitada. Mostro aqui um bocadinho do top antes do quilting. Foi cosido à máquina e tem aplicações e bordado à mão. Agora está no bastidor. Quem faz quilting à mão sabe como esta parte é saborosa.

I know I neglected this blog and I hope you forgive me. I have strong reasons for that. I have been focused on my four seasons quilt for the last week and time is my enemy. I hope to behave like a tortoise, slow and steady, and finish this quilt before the deadline. I’m showing you just a little piece before I quilt it. The top is machine pieced with appliqué and some embroidery and now the sandwich is on the hoop to be hand quilted. All of you hand quilters know how fun this part can be.

Acordei, uma chávena de café como habitual. Tirei a primeira fotografia ao romper do dia.
I woke up this morning, and took a cup of coffee as usual. The light was breaking and I took the first shot. Depois as rotinas antes do trabalho. Uma aula às 9:30 mas ainda tempo para a segunda fotografia antes de sair.
Then, my morning routines before work. I had a class at 9:30 but I took another photo just before I left home.Esta foi tirada logo após o regresso a casa.
Immediately after my return I took the third photo.

E esta após o jantar já com luz artificial.
Quando comecei o meu blog em Janeiro umdos maiores problemas com que tive de lidar foi com a falta de luz. Em fotografia sou uma amadora e o meu método é tentativa erro. Mas a luz é um grande desafio ainda não ultrapassado. Agora que os dias encurtam tenho pensado no problema e de como o resolver. Daí esta sucessão monótona da mesma imagem. Dentro em pouco regressrei de noite e como não me parece haver diferenca significativa na qualidade da segunda e da terceira fotografia acho que há uma forte possibilidade de começar a tirá-las pela manhã. Mas hoje ainda tive tempo de visitar o four seasons swap e bisbolhetar os o blog roll (entre R e Z).Vejam os quilts lindos da Rose Marie, Wendy, Zita e Shiella. Não são uma maravilha?

And this one, after supper, with artificial light.
I started my blog in January and one of my biggest problems was to deal with the lake of light. Concerning photography I am an amateur and my method is trial/error. But light is really a big challenge for me. Now that days are coming shorter I have been thinking about how could solve this matter because in a few weeks it will be night at six pm. I don’t think there is a great difference between the quality of the second and the third photos and now I have the possibility to take them just before going to work.
Today I went to the four season swap blog and visited some blogs of the blog roll. I was amazed. Look at Rose Marie’s, Wendy’s, Zita’s and Shiela’s quilts. Aren’t they lovely? I only visited the bottom of list from R to Z. I left the top for the next time.

the zero made the difference

De tempos a tempos faço as compras de supermercado on-line. Poupo tempo, energias e talvez alguns euros na redução da compra compulsiva. Mas não desta vez. Como não tornei a verificar a lista antes da emissão de ordem de compra, este foi o resultado: 30 kg de farinha de trigo em lugar dos três habituais. Nem queria acreditar quando me entraram com estes volumes casa dentro. Há que os gastar antes de expirar o prazo de validade e já agora dá-se uso áqueles electrodomésticos que vão ficando esquecidos no fundo da despensa.

From time to time I do my grocery shopping on-line. I save time, energies and, perhaps some Euros by scaling down compulsive buying. Not this time. I didn’t check the list before I made the final order and this was the result: 30 kg of wheat flour instead the usual three kg.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that huge flour packages mountain on my kitchen floor. I must use it before the expiration date and at the same time I make use of some appliances forgotten on the darkest side of the pantry. So, let’s bake.

Let me play among the stars

Aquilo que à partida poderá parecer enfadonho e repetitivo torna-se muito divertido quando se trabalha com muitas cores e padrões. Estas estrelas, todas iguais mas todas diferentes, são para o top de um quilt que tenho de fazer depressinha, depressinha para a mesa de uma amiga.
Ainda a ver estrelas. Mais um swap e desta vez é a Nettie que o está a organizar. Tem duas componentes irresistíveis: estrelas e azul.

Something apparently boring and repetitive can be very funny when it’s played with lots of colors and prints. These stars are all the same in shape but all different in color composition and they are for a table runner I must finish quickly for a friend of mine.
Still among the stars. Another swap, this time promoted by Nettie, with two irresistible details: stars and blues.

Finalmente escolhi os tecidos para o 4 seasons swap. É entusiasmante iniciar um novo trabalho com uma paleta de ricas cores outonais. Tenho grandes planos para este pequeno quilt que compreenderá patchwork, bordado e um bocadinho de aplicação.

I finally chose the fabrics for the 4 seasons swap. So exciting to begin a new project with a palette of rich autumn colors. I have great plans for that small quilt with piecing, embroidery and a little bit of appliqué.

Quando olhei para estes tecidos em conjunto apercebi-me como as cores podem ter nomes lindos associados aos alimentos: chocolate, mostarda, aveia, ameixa, verde mirtilo. São mesmo perfeitas para a próxima estação. E porque não, entrementes, um pequeno lavor com blocos tradicionais e aplicação? Foi tão bom fazer o quilting já noite dentro...

When I looked for those fabrics I realized how colors can have such beautiful food names: chocolate, mustard, olive, oatmeal, plume, myrtle green. They are perfect for the next season. Meanwhile why not make with them a small handiwork, with traditional blocks and appliqué? It was so good to quilt it last night, late in the evening.

From overseas, two swaps

Recebi ontem da Kathy este maravilhoso trabalho em redwork. Foi o que me coube no swap de porta-agulhas organizado pela Linda, moderadora do grupo de redworkstitchers do yahoo. O meu já o tinha publicado num post anterior. Vendo este trabalho podem imaginar como me sentir ao abrir o envelope. Obrigada Kathy. Tinha prometido a mim mesma alguma moderação na partipação nos swaps. Participo entusisticamente nestas trocas mas como gosto de cumprir prazos e enviar alguma coisa de que eu goste muito, um grande comprometimento pode ser arriscado. Mas não resisti ao apelo da Margaret e cá estou eu de novo, no meio de um swap para quatro estações (podem ver à direita no menu do blog, o logo). Para já tenho de fazer um mini-quilt com o tema Outono. Ideias não faltam.

I received yesterday this wonderful rework embroidery. It was send by Kathy and it's from the swap organized by Linda, coordinator of redworkstitchers from yahoo. I had already post the needle case I sent. Looking to this master piece you can imagine how happy I felt when I open the mail envelope. Thanks again Kathy. I had promised to myself some moderation about swaps participation. I like to be on time and make to my partner something I truly love. So, a commitment in too many swaps shouldn't be a good option. But I couldn't resist to Margaret's swap and here I am swapping again. This time I will make a mini quilt with a fall theme. My head is full of ideas.

Stitches in rows

Quando comprei a minha máquina de costura foi como se tratasse de um brinquedo novo. Experimentei todos os pontos. Todos os pés calcadores. Tods os botões. Sabem como é...
Hoje, a limpar o quarto de costura encontrei desirmandas algumas dessas experiências e deitei tudo no lixo. Senti alguma pena e voltei a buscá-las. Acertei-as em quadrado, uma fita enviesada a rematar. Ficaram janotas e estes micro-quilts vão funcionar como samplers na parede em frente da máquina de costura.
PS: não sou propriamente uma coleccionadora de trastes mas estes pontinhos estavam no caixote a olhar para mim e não resisti.
When I bought my sewing machine I play with it as it was my new toy. All the stitches, all footers, all the buttons where experimented. You know how it is…
Today when I was cleaning my sewing room I found some of those trials and I threw it away. But I felt sorry for that and I picked up those uneven pieces, I squared and bind them. At the end they looked pretty good and these little quilts will work as samplers on the wall in front of the sewing machine.
PS: I am not a pack rat but those stitches were in the trash bin looking at me and I couldn’t resist

Let's twist

O logcabin é um clássico que maioria senão todas as “quilters” já usaram no eu reportório. Parece e é uma figura simples mas as potencialidades deste quadrado constituido por um triângulo claro e outro escuro, são surpreendentes. Gosto deste bloco em particular e não podia deixar de fazer com ele um mini-quilt para a minha colecção. Comecei-o há tempo e faz parte dos UFOs já mencionados. Peguei-lhe novamente e gostava de mostrar os exercicíos que efectuei para escolher a disposição dos blocos. Vejam o que uma simples viragem do bloco pode fazer.

Log cabin is a classic. I’m sure every quilter had already made something with this block. It seems and it is a simple shape but its potentialities are amazing. I love this block in particular, and it couldn’t be missing on my collection of mini-quilts. I started it some time ago and it belongs to the UFOs I mention before. I picked it up again and those are the exercises I made in order to choose which layout would please me more. Look what a little twist can make:

Escolhi este. Se olharem para a barra escura verão uma espécie de corda que se desenha e enrola à volta da barra. O próximo passo será o border.
I chose this one. If you look on the dark stripes you can see a kind of rope like a spiral. And for the next step, the border.

White sheet of paper

Para mim, o fim de férias foi sempre um tempo de grande expectativa e muito produtivo. Muito mais evidente e apelativo que o início de cada ano de calendário. Até porque os dias de férias permitiram-me voltar ao trabalho descansada e com novas ideias o que dificilmente acontece após o Natal. Programar, sem pressões, a minha "agenda dos crafts" é fundamental para poder concretizar a meu gosto algumas das coisas que pretendo fazer.

Hoje, a minha primeira linha da agenda: UFOs

Desenterrar alguns UFOs e dar-lhes um destino parece-me uma boa maneira de começar a época. A Judy fez-nos um desafio mostrando ela própria os seus UFOs. Os meus são menos (felizmente) mas pesam se não forem acabados.

The end of holidays was always a time of great expectations and very productive. Much more than the beginning of a new year. After holidays I am rested, with new ideas which don’t happen after Christmas. To plan, without pressure, my "crafty agenda" is essential in order to achieve the goals I pretend.
Today, the first row of my agenda: UFOs
To dig out the UFOs and give them a destiny could be one of the best things to start a new season. Judy made us a challenge showing her UFOs and asking us for doing the same. I have much less UFOs than she has but they weight tons on my mind if they stay in that status.

Quero acabar pelo menos o log cabin e o nine patch até fins de Setembro e o quilt dos bules (fotografia em baixo) durante Outubro. Depois verei os prazos impôr-me para acabar os trabalhos em bordado (fotografia 1 e 2).

I want to finish at least the log cabin and the nine patch quilt till the end of September and the teapot wall hanging in October (third photo). After that I will see the timings to finish the flower and the Hardanger embroidery (photos 1 & 2).O tempo começa a contar agora!

just a few stitches

Organizar e deitar fora o que já não faz falta deveria ser feito todos os anos antes de inciar a nova estação. Repito isto para mim na tentativa de conseguir efectivamente pôr em prática este método e tento implementá-lo todos os anos antes de Setembro.

Organizing and decluttering must be done before the start of a new quilting season. I always repeat it to myself expecting to accomplish these tasks. That's what I try to do before September every year.

Assim, tentei ver-me livre de algumas tiras e restos de tecidos fiz alguns sacos como este. Desta vez fiz um saquinho para a alfazema e personalizei-o com o nome do meu blog. Coordenam com o saco mas podem ser usados separadamente.
So, I tried to get rid of some stripes and other quilt leftovers and made some scrap bags the way I made this one. This time I sewed a little lavender pillow and I personalized it with the name of my blog. They coordinate with the scrap bag but can be used separately.

Timeless

Vi pela primeira vez o trabalho das tricotadeiras do Mogadouro há alguns anos e foi amor à primeira vista. Nem consigo imaginar o número de horas para fazer uma colcha como esta. Encomendei-a há um ano atrás e ficou pronta em Julho passado. É lindissimo o tricot em fio de linho e não me canso de a admirar.

I saw the work of Mogadouro knitters a few years ago and it was love at first sight. I can't imagine the number of hours needed to make a bed spread like this one. I ordered it a year ago and it was finished last July. It is absolutly beautiful the linen thread knitting and I can't take my eyes out of it.

Red

Redwork é um dos meus bordados preferidos. Pontos simples, linha de uma só cor, um tecido claro e é tudo para obter um excelente contraste. Tão frugal que pode ser feito em qualquer parte.
Aqui fi-lo para uma aplicação num livro porta agulhas.

Redword is one of my prefered embroideries. Simple stitches, only one thread color, white fabric and a splendid contrast. So frugal that can be done anywhere! Here I made it for an application on a needlebook.

Usei um linho de Guimarães, fino e de textura regular, para o bordado.
I used a light white linen for the embroidered redwork application.

Fiz a aplicação do bordado sobre o linho cru com um ponto de cobertor.

I appliquéd the redwork with small blanket stitches on a raw thick linen.

As folhas em feltro e a sobrecapa num tecido em tons de vermelho.

Inside, red felt and a flower print fabric in shades of red.
Alguns pontos à máquina permitiram prender as folhas à capa e ao mesmo tempo produzir a lombada.
I made some machine stitches to bind the leaves and make the book spine.

Small

Por razões diversas o tempo não nos chega para tudo o que gostariamos de fazer. No meu caso, um trabalho a tempo inteiro não me deixa o tempo livre necessário para pôr em prática os projectos que me passam pela cabeça. Por isso a ideia de fazer quilts mais pequenos, alguns dos quais verdadeiros quilts de bonecas, tem vindo a tomar forma. Tenho um objectivo para estes trabalhos. Cobrir uma das paredes do meu recente quarto de costura e dar-lhe um ar mais aconchegado.

For different reasons time is not enough to make everything we would like to do. I’m a full time worker and the time I have to spend with my hobbies is limited. The idea of making smaller quilts came to my mind and for a while I have been making doll size quilts. I have a purpose for these projects. I will decorate a wall of my sewing room to turn it cozier.
But I see other advantages in small projects besides they are quicker to finish. It is very rewarding to finish a project and a small project has more chances to be finished then a bigger one. I can try more techniques and I can keep more quilts in less space.

Neste quilt experimentei uma nova técnica de "manga" para fazer paralelogramos. O quilting, esse subtil toque final, foi feito assimetricamente e os cantos adjacentes têm um desenho diferente.Tenho trabalhado no meu quilting em movimentos livres mas ainda não estou segura para o aplicar num trabalho de maior dimensão. Em breve mostrarei os progressos. A combinação de ores não é bem aquilo a que estou mais habituada mas afinal isto é um quilt de brincar e nãoum legado para futuro.

With this quilt I tried a new technique for making quick parallelograms using a “sleeve” method. The quilting, that subtle final touch, is asymmetrical and adjacent corners have a different pattern. I have been working on my FMQ but I’m still not secure to apply it on a big quilt. Soon, I will show how it goes. The colors match was another experiment. It is quite different from what I am used to. But this is just a doll quilt not an heirloom.

Surprise

Hoje recebi a minha bolsa do swap sacos aromáticos. Esta foi a segunda que a Luz, a minha parceira secreta, me enviou. A primeira perdeu-se pelo caminho e não chegou até mim. Ela teve a enorme gentileza de tornar a fazer outra e ontem tinha-a na caixa do correio. Foi uma surpresa. Gostei muito da bolsa que me enviou e ainda por cima teve o trabalho de bordar no centro do bloco, a ponto cruz miudinho, a inicial do meu nome. Lá dentro umas coisinhas preciosas e uns cheirinhos da Provença. Luz, para ti um grande abraço.

Yesterday I received my bag from the swap bolsitas olorosas. This was the second bag Luz, my secret partner, sent me. The first one was lost on the way. She was so kind and made me another one with the first letter of my name with a tiny cross stich embroidery on the center of the block. I love it. Inside some beautiful goodies and a fagrance of Provence. A big hug to you Luz.
