Spring cleaning

Spring cleaning is such a blessing! It turns a tired home after the long winter into a fresh and pleasant place. But if you think this post is about the spring cleaning, forget it.
Quem pense que este post é acerca das prodigiosas limpezas de Primavera, que transformam uma casa cansada do longo inverno, num local aprazível de frescura, tire daí a ideia.

I am not saying I wouldn’t love to be able to focus and tackle that huge but grateful task. I wish I could be an organized woman to sort and purge all the clutter of my home.

Não é que eu não gostasse de me conseguir focalizar e empreender essa gratificante empresa que é a limpeza de Primavera. Como eu gostaria de organizadamente seleccionar, separar e dar um fim à tralha que tenho cá em casa...When someone tells me about how efficiently her closet was cleaned and organized it makes me feel a little envy.

Quando me falam dos eficientes raids de organização que algumas pessoas fazem nos seus roupeiros, quase, quase tenho inveja. As I am not a domestic goddess, I try to maintain my incipient organization, moderating the consumism, and cheering and perfuming my drawers with lavender sachets every year.

E como não tenho essas prendas domésticas vou mantendo a minha rudimentar arrumação moderando o meu consumo, e alegrando e perfumando as gavetas com aquilo que faço com a prata da casa.

friendship here and there

Unexpectedly, from overseas, Beth sent me this cute pincushion. They are never too much and this one will be used exclusively for my tiny appliqué pins.

Inesperadamente, do outro lado do mar, a Beth enviou-me esta almofada de alfinetes. Para mim nunca são demais e esta vai ficar em exclusividade para os meus alfinetes de appliqué.

Mid afternoon yesterday. Ana brought me the yummiest pastries anyone could dream. A box with ovos moles de Aveiro. A splendid afternoon, sewing, talking and listening.

A meio da tarde de ontem a Ana trouxe em mãos uma caixa de ovos moles de Aveiro. Para gulosas claro! Os da confeitaria Peixinho são os meus preferidos mas há quem diga que os da Maria Apresentação são mais genuínos. Que escolha quem souber.
Uma tarde bem passada nas costuras, a falar e a ouvir.

weekend

After a long rainy spring we finally had a lovely weekend. It was time to go out, to breathe fresh air and look at the sea.
Depois da nossa primavera invernosa tivemos este maravilhoso fim de semana. Para sair, respirar ar puro e ver o mar.In the mean time a quick visit to my sister in law and a soft gift to her. Two quilted cushions for her sofa. From a quilter, what else could it be?
E no meio, uma rápida visita à cunhada que acompanhei de uma prenda confortável. Duas almofadas para o sofá. Vindo de mim que mais poderia ser?

Swap update 3

This is the last post I will write on this series about swaps. I have been participating on swaps for a while and each one is different in its own conception or on the way I feel about it. This one was my first round robin and I must tell that this experience has been quite unique. To follow another person’s work is quite a challenge. We must respect the previous guidelines concerning color, design, over all looking and at the same time we must create something that should reflect our personality. Not easy!

Este é o ultimo post desta série sobre swaps. Tenho vindo a participar desde há algum tempo e cada um é diferente na sua concepção ou na forma como eu os vejo. Este foi o meu primeiro round robin e devo confessar ter sido uma jornada diferente. Prosseguir o trabalho de outrem é um desafio. Há que respeitar quem nos precedeu, na combinação de cores, no desenho do patchwork, no aspecto geral do trabalho mas, ao mesmo tempo, criar uma parte do quilt que reflicta de alguma forma quem somos. Não é fácil!

I don´t know if I accomplished all the criteria but I did my best. The first two photos are from third round of the Spring Fling Round Robin. On this round I had to make the second border of the top. The original center block made by Jeanette with Anne´s first border was lost on his way to Portugal and who knows where it is now, maybe on the quilts neverland.
Anne duplicated her work making another center and first border. Her work is absolutely beautiful, with the most precise technique.

Não sei se cumpri todos esses critérios mas fiz o meu melhor. As primeiras duas fotos correspondem ao terceiro round, no qual eu fiz o segundo e último border do top. O conjunto original do bloco central feito pela Jeanette e primeiro border da Anne, perdeu-se a caminho de Portugal e sabe-se lá onde estará. Deve haver por aí um limbo para estas coisas.
A Anne duplicou a sua tarefa fazendo tudo de novo. O seu trabalho é de uma qualidade excepcional em matéria de precisão.

On the last two photos, the quilt I finished (quilting, binding and labeling). I received the top from Solidia and I made a heavy stippling quilting around the butterflies to pop up their shape. On the center I just follow the patchwork lines with smooth echoed curves.
I like to look to the quilting from the backing. Because I use on the backings a plain fabric or a simple patchwork pattern, most of the times, I can see clearly the quilting design. This one reminds me some how the boutis and the trapunto. Maybe my nest project will be whole cloth quilt...

As duas últimas fotos são do quilt que acolchoei, tarefa que corresponde ao quarto round e último. Recebi o top da Solidia e fiz um quilting denso à volta das borboletas para as evidenciar. No meio, linhas curvas, simples, a seguirem o desenho do patchwork.
Gosto de ver o quilting pela parte detrás porque, em geral, utilizo nos backings uma só folha de tecido ou um patchwork muito simples, onde se revela muito melhor o desenho. Este, com as devidas diferenças, lembra-me o trapunto ou o boutis. Quem sabe se o meu próximo projecto vai ser um quilt de um só pano…

swap update (2)

This beautiful spring quilt made a long journey from Norway to my home. This is the quilt I got on the Four Seasons Quilt Swap and it was made by May Kristin, the Norwegian quilter to whom I made the winter quilt. Of course I didn´t suspect anything about it and now I am sure Margaret loves to surprise the swap participants.
As you see May Kristen made a wonderful work, joyful and bright, with beautiful tulips. She added tiny and effective details which make a huge difference on the quilt appearance. See the little beads on the corollas edges? Just lovely.

Este quilt de primavera, mesmo a meu gosto, fez uma grande jornada desde a Noruega até minha casa. Foi o que me calhou no Four Seasons Quilt Swap, feito por May Kristin, a quilter norueguesa para quem enviei o mini quilt de inverno. A Margaret, coordenadora do swap, gosta de nos fazer umas surpresas.
Como vêm é um trabalho bonito, primaveril e cheio de pormenores. Conseguem ver as missangas bordadas na corola das tulipas? Detalhes que fazem a diferença.

She also added on the package some batik fabrics that I can’t find here in Portugal the last edition of Quilter’s Home (brand new for me) and chocolates. I must confess it was hard to wait until I shoot the pictures. Now I have already taste them and the only thing I can say is a big thank to you May Kristin.
Generosamente adicionou ao pacote uns batiks, que cá não consigo encontrar, o último número da revista Quilter´s Home (desconhecia e gostei) e não parou por aqui. Aos chocolates for difícil resistir antes de tirar a fotografia. Muito, muito obrigada!

Now is time for the next round, the summer quilt. More than a hundred quilters subscribed for this season. Wait to see the results.
Segue-se a próxima etapa com mais de uma centena de quilters inscritas. Esperem para ver os resultados no próximo Verão.

swaps update (1)

On the past weeks my mail box has been very busy. Now is time to show, in a series of posts, what is going on with the swaps I am participating.
This first one is about the star swap. Nettie sent me these stars a few days ago and they were sewn by her and her sister Lisa. Although the initial color scheme is respected some colors were added to improve the visual impact and to bring spots of brightness to the overall looking. The patterns of the stars, mine Nettie’s and Lisa’s are all different and I change my mind about the destiny of these blocks. First I thought to make a lap quilt with them but later I saw here an excellent opportunity to make a hanging wall sampler quilt. There is a one round left and after that I can begin the quilt assembly.

Nas últimas semanas a minha caixa do correio tem tido muito que fazer. É altura de lhes mostrar, , numa série de posts, o que se anda a passar com os swaps em que participo.
Este primeiro é acerca do swap das estrelas. A Nettie enviou-me há alguns dias os blocos do segundo round, feitas por ela e pela irmã Lisa. Apesar de terem mantido um esquema de cor que se estende a todos os blocos algumas cores foram adicionadas, em pequenas manchas, que funcionam como focos de interesse e melhoram o impacto visual.
Todos os blocos têm um modelo diferente e por talvez por isso mudei a minha ideia quanto ao seu destino. Inicialmente tinha pensado em fazer um quilt para o sofá mas parece-me que esta é uma excelente oportunidade para um sampler que decerto vai direito para uma das minhas paredes. Falta apenas uma volta de estrelas para depois poder começar o top.

Running the Numbers

When I saw the consumption numbers brilliantly transposed to photos by Chris Jordan I thought about how I deal with consume.
You know I use every little scrap (even the selvages) of fabric. I will show you, how I use the scraps of batting. Most of them are leftovers I get when squaring the quilts.
I carefully roll the stripes of batting until I use them.

Ao ver estatísticas do consumo, brilhantemente transpostas para fotografia por Chris Jordan , lembrei-me de fazer este post. Já sabem que gosto de aproveitar ao limite o que tenho, desde os pedacinhos mais pequenos de tecido, às ourelas. Mas os pedaços de batting também têm aproveitamento. Deve acontecer a todas, as sobras e mais sobras de batting que resultam do acerto final dos quilts. Aqui em casa são enrolados cuidadosamente e guardados para uso posterior.

I put two stripes side by side and then I overlay a inch.
Começo por alinhar dois pedaços e sobreponho-los cerca de 2 cm. I cut the two layers on the middle with a rotary cutter.
Corto pelo meio a parte sobreposta com o rotary cutter.
On the larger stripes I mark perpendicular lines just to keep the alignment.
Nas duas tiras maiores marco algumas linhas para não desacertar o alinhamento das duas peças.
I sew both stripes with a zig-zag and the walking foot to avoid stretching the batting.
Uno com um ponto zig-zag feito com o walking foot. Este pé calcador faz uma alimentação regular do tecido, não o estica e por isso não provoca ondulamentos.

I continue adding other stripes to this sewed piece with the same technique. The most important thing is that we must get a perfect horizontal sheet of batting. I use this new batting in small projects like cushions, specially if they are heavily quilted.

Vou depois aumentando este novo batting com outros pedaços e sempre com a mesma técnica. Uso-o para trabalhos pequenos sobretudo se forem densamente quiltados. O mais importante é que no final se obtenha uma superfície de batting absolutamente horizontal.

The thinner stripes are cut in small squares and I use them to fill pincushions etc.

As tiras fininhas que sobram são cortadas em pedacinhos pequenos e misturo-as nos enchimentos de almofadas de alfinetes etc.

Fiz este post porque todos os pequenos gestos contam.

Another kind of passion

Fortunately I have twenty four hours a day like everybody else. Not less, not more. I must fit in my 24 hours all the passions of my life.

Felizmente o meu dia tem vinte e quatro horas como toda a gente. nem mais, nem menos. E nesse tempo têm de caber à medida as paixões da minha vida.

Maybe you have already suspected that I am found of the green kingdom but I don´t have room in my home and in my busy day to take care properly of these beautiful living organisms.

Já deve ter dado para perceber o meu gosto pelas plantas e um dia ainda hei-de aqui contar como isso deu e mudou o rumo à minha vida. Mas hoje não tenho espaço na minha casa nem no meu tempo para lhes dedicar a atenção que merecem.

That’s why I have so many Saintpaulias: poor soil, shadow or soft light, days and days without water, forgotten most of the time and this how they generously reward my lack of assistance. And they have an amazing power for its vegetative reproduction. Each leaf turns quickly in a new beautiful plant.

É por isso que tenho tantas Saintpaulias: solo paupérrimo, pouca ou média luz, dias e dias à sede, esquecidas na maioria do tempo e é assim que me agradecem todo este abandono. Além disso têm a enorme capacidade para se reproduzirem vegetativamente e de cada folhinha resultar rapidamente numa nova planta.

Flower prints

I had a terrible week and this blog has been highly neglected. I am very thankful for each and every comment on the last post and today I will check the list of my feeds to see the news on your blogs.
I must warn you that this post is not about stars. I have made so many star blocks on the last months that I wonder if I still know how to make other patterns.
When I looked for this top I realized that all the fabrics I chose were with flower prints. The last quilt I made I was asked to not put flower prints on it. I don´t think this is an odd situation because I am used to that kind of peculiarities. A quilter friend of mine hates yellow, another one doesn´t like bright colors and so on. Maybe this quilt in an unintentional reaction but in fact I love these fabrics and I am making this quilt for my mother and I am sure she will be very happy with all these busy flower prints.
At the moment am thinking if my taste about fabric has any restrictions. Till now I hadn’t find any and I don´t know the meaning of the word ugly related to stash.
Tive uma semana complicada e negligenciei este blog. Estou muito grata pelos comentários no meu último post e ainda hoje irei verificar a minha lista de feeds para me pôr a par das novidades dos vossos blogs.
Devo avisar que este post não é sobre estrelas. Tenho feito tantas nos últimos meses que me pergunto se ainda saberei fazer outra coisa.
Quando olhei para este top dei-me conta que todos os padrões escolhidos são de flores. O último quilt que fiz não incluí nenhum tecido às flores por vontade expressa da futura dona. Não me parece uma situação estranha já que estou habituada a determinadas peculiaridades. Uma quilter minha amiga detesta amarelo, outra não gosta de cores vivas e por aí adiante. Talvez este quilt seja uma reacção involuntária ao constrangimento anterior, mas o que é facto é que gosto muito destes tecidos e como este trabalho é para a minha mãe, tenho a certeza que também ela vai gostar desta confusão de flores e florzinhas.
Ando a pensar se tenho alguma restrição no meu gosto pelos tecidos e até agora não encontrei nada. No que diz respeito aos trapos desconheço o significado de feio.

Spring quilt

Another quilt for the Four Season quilt swap. After Fall and Winter, my first option was to make a quilt with traditional basket blocks because I think these blocks can be recreated in a modern fashion way. But then I saw the fields covered with poppies and I couldn’t resist. This flower says spring all over the world, and I confess that I love poppy shades, from scarlet to gold yellow.
The 4 ½” poppy blocks were smeared on a matrix field of 1 ½” squares and 1 ½”*3” rectangles of soft greens and light earth tones unequally distributed, forming two spots of background grass.
I chose one of the beiges of the top to make the binding. I didn’t want to frame the quilt with a contrasting color. This way we can imagine a big poppy field multiplied beyond the boundaries of this small quilt.

Mais um quilt para o Four Season quilt swap. Depois do Outono e do Inverno a minha primeira escolha para a Primavera foi um bloco de cestos tradicional porque qualquer bloco tradicional pode ser recriado de uma forma muito apelativa. Mas quando comecei a ver o campo a cobrir-se de papoilas dei o dito por não dito. Esta flor é Primavera em todo o mundo e confesso um gosto particular pelos seus tons que vão do escarlate ao amarelo dourado.
Os blocos de papoilas de 4 ½” foram semeados numa matriz de quadrados 1 ½” e rectângulos de ½”*3” em tons de verde e terra suaves, distribuídos desigualmente, formando duas manchas distintas de base.
Escolhi um dos beges para o binding porque não queria um aspecto de moldura usando uma cor contrastante. Assim, podemos imaginar um campo de papoilas que se multiplique para além das fronteiras deste pequeno quilt.

Stars, flowers and cats

These stars were made for Nettie’s star swap started last year. This time, new stars but the same color scheme. I just added a pinch of rust and new shades of blue.

Estas estrelas foram feitas para a continuação do swap da Nettie. Desta vez novas estrelas e o mesmo esquema de cores. Só adicionei uma pitadinha de ferrugem e algumas novas tonalidades de azul.This swap has been an excellent opportunity to find new star blocks and practice a little bit some old patterns like an eight point star.

Este swap tem sido um excelente oportunidade para encontrar novos modelos e praticar um pouco blocos mais tradicionais como uma estrela de oito pontas.

This weekend was time to visit my parents. Just in time to see the last spring flowers because soon the weather will warm too much.

Este fim de semana foi também tempo de visitar os meus pais. A tempo de ver as últimas flores de Primavera antes da chegada do calor Alentejano.And I always end up with a bunch of the most beautiful ones.

E eu acabo sempre por trazer um ramo das mais bonitas

Of course I have to show you this little star. As I promised, here is the photo of the kitten born before Easter. She is so cute!

Claro que, tal como o prometido, vos tinha de mostrar a fotografia da gatinha nascida antes da Páscoa. Uma perdição para quem, como eu gosta, de gatos.

Needle lace

I bought this needle lace some years ago on e-bay. On that time I wondered how could someone get rid of such treasure. Needle lace is one of my favorite laces. With few resources and with just one stitch the most beautiful web can be created. To make it we only need a simple sewing needle, a cotton tread and to know how to make the buttonhole stitch. Most needle laces have floral motifs. The geometric shapes of Puncetto Valsesiano is one of the exceptions.

Comprei esta renda de agulha há alguns anos no e-bay. Na altura, deu-me que pensar como era possível alguém se desfazer desta preciosidade. A renda de agulha é uma das minhas preferidas. Com poucos recursos e apenas um ponto fazem-se as rendas mais intrincadas e minuciosas. Para isso basta ter uma simples agulha de coser, fio de algodão e saber o ponto de casear. A maior parte das rendas de agulha têm motivos florais. A geometria do Puncetto Valsesiano é uma excepção.

Boîte à bonbons

Perhaps I was thinking about this music when I made the first border of this round robin or this is just because I am crazy for chocolate. The center block was sent to me by Liz and I have already sent it with the first border to the person who will make the second border. At the first glance it was not easy to imagine how to introduce new colors on the center scheme. First I tried to dilute the brown with new colors but this center color was too strong. If you can’t beat them, join them. I introduced new chocolate browns and all sorts of chocolate fillings like mentha, vanilla, strawberry and lemon. Would you like to take a bombon?

Talvez pensasse nesta música quando fiz o primeiro border deste round robin, ou aconteceu apenas porque sou gulosa por chocolate. O bloco central foi feito pela Liz e já mandei o conjunto deste bloco, com o border que adicionei para quem vai fazer o segundo border. À primeira vista não foi fácil imaginar como introduzir novas cores a partir do esquema do bloco central. Primeiro tentei diluir o castanho mas a sua presença era tão dominante que seria impossível contorná-lo. Se não o venci, juntei-me a ele. Introduzi novos padrões em tons castanho chocolate e os recheios dos bombons em menta, baunilha, morango, limão. Vai um bombom?
