These stars were made for Nettie’s star swap started last year. This time, new stars but the same color scheme. I just added a pinch of rust and new shades of blue.

Só adicionei uma pitadinha de ferrugem e algumas novas tonalidades de azul.This swap has been an excellent opportunity to find new star blocks and practice a little bit some old patterns like an eight point star.

Este swap tem sido um excelente oportunidade para encontrar novos modelos e praticar um pouco blocos mais tradicionais como uma estrela de oito pontas.

This weekend was time to visit my parents. Just in time to see the last spring flowers because soon the weather will warm too much.

Este fim de semana foi também tempo de visitar os meus pais. A tempo de ver as últimas flores de Primavera antes da chegada do calor Alentejano.And I always end up with a bunch of the most beautiful ones.

Claro que, tal como o prometido, vos tinha de mostrar a fotografia da gatinha nascida antes da Páscoa. Uma perdição para quem, como eu gosta, de gatos.

Needle lace

I bought this needle lace some years ago on e-bay. On that time I wondered how could someone get rid of such treasure. Needle lace is one of my favorite laces. With few resources and with just one stitch the most beautiful web can be created. To make it we only need a simple sewing needle, a cotton tread and to know how to make the buttonhole stitch. Most needle laces have floral motifs. The geometric shapes of Puncetto Valsesiano is one of the exceptions.

Comprei esta renda de agulha há alguns anos no e-bay. Na altura, deu-me que pensar como era possível alguém se desfazer desta preciosidade. A renda de agulha é uma das minhas preferidas. Com poucos recursos e apenas um ponto fazem-se as rendas mais intrincadas e minuciosas. Para isso basta ter uma simples agulha de coser, fio de algodão e saber o ponto de casear. A maior parte das rendas de agulha têm motivos florais. A geometria do Puncetto Valsesiano é uma excepção.

Boîte à bonbons

Perhaps I was thinking about this music when I made the first border of this round robin or this is just because I am crazy for chocolate. The center block was sent to me by Liz and I have already sent it with the first border to the person who will make the second border. At the first glance it was not easy to imagine how to introduce new colors on the center scheme. First I tried to dilute the brown with new colors but this center color was too strong. If you can’t beat them, join them. I introduced new chocolate browns and all sorts of chocolate fillings like mentha, vanilla, strawberry and lemon. Would you like to take a bombon?

Talvez pensasse nesta música quando fiz o primeiro border deste round robin, ou aconteceu apenas porque sou gulosa por chocolate. O bloco central foi feito pela Liz e já mandei o conjunto deste bloco, com o border que adicionei para quem vai fazer o segundo border. À primeira vista não foi fácil imaginar como introduzir novas cores a partir do esquema do bloco central. Primeiro tentei diluir o castanho mas a sua presença era tão dominante que seria impossível contorná-lo. Se não o venci, juntei-me a ele. Introduzi novos padrões em tons castanho chocolate e os recheios dos bombons em menta, baunilha, morango, limão. Vai um bombom?

weekend

I confess I am lazy and to wake up at 5 o’clock in the morning is not what I call a perfect beginning for a weekend. Besides that, everything was great.
Confesso a minha preguiça e acordar às cinco da manhã não é o que considero o começo ideal para fim de semana. Além deste pormenor tudo o resto foi muito bom.

And watching these delicate flower blooming were the best rewards for the sacrifice of a good night’s sleep.
E ver a delicadeza destas flores foram as melhores recompensas pelo sacrifício de uma madrugada de sono.

Addiction

I gave up from trying to justify myself every time I buy a new fabric. I confess to be addicted but until now I have never search for a cure. And I have accomplices. My daughter, my friends, they all participate on this bad behavior and bring me fabrics from whatever they go.

Desisti de tentar justificar porque compro tantos tecidos. É mesmo um vício e ainda não procurei cura. Além disso tenho cúmplices: a minha filha e os meu amigos que participam nesta atitude irresponsável e compram-me tecidos onde quer que vão.

Jenny Bowker

Saturday was a splendid day. Finally I met Jenny Bowker. I knew her work from the internet but to meet her personally is something I will never forget because,

• She is a wonderful teacher and I learned lot of tips and good technique with her;
• It is a delight to see her hands moving freely and painting the quilt surface;
• Her quilts are gorgeous (the photos on her site don’t make justice to the beauty of her art);
• And especially because she is a great human being.

I forgot to take my camera so I lost the opportunity to photograph Jenny and all the wonderful ladies at the workshop. These photos are one of the exercises I made.

Passei um óptimo sábado. Conheci finalmente a Jenny Bowker. Conhecia o seu esplêndido trabalho através da internet mas conhecê-la pessoalmente foi marcante. Porque:

• É uma excepcional professora e com ela aprendi muito saber e técnica de quilting;
• É um prazer ver as suas mãos que “pintam” livremente a superfície do quilt;
• Os quilts que apresentou são de uma beleza que ainda não tinha visto (as fotos do site não fazem nem de longe justiça à beleza destas obras de arte);
• E especialmente porque é um ser humano de excepção.

Esqueci-me da máquina fotográfica e por isso perdi oportunidade de fotografar a Jenny e todas as pessoas simpáticas que encontrei no workshop. À falta do resto, ficam duas fotos de um dos meus exercícios.

From Málaga

Yesterday I received the mini quilt from Emilia's swap. It was sent by Noel and I love the precision of her foundation piecing technique. My mini quilt collection is growing fast. Soon I have to put them on the wall and now I am trying to cluster them and find an harmonious look for the overall group.

Ontem recebi o mini quilt do swap Primavera. Foi feito pela Noel na técnica de foundation piecing e é de uma precisão que não poderia deixar de apreciar muito. Com estes swaps, a minha colecção de mini quilts cresce rapidamente e em breve os vou dignamente expor numa das minhas paredes. Como são muito distintos, estou a tentar agrupá-los de uma forma lógica e harmoniosa.

She sent me too some cute and useful things to embellish my sewing room. A cute clip, a floss organizer and this lovely, lovely patchwork flower. Thank you so much Noel.
Mandou-me também um clip e um organizador de fios. A tanta gentileza juntou uma flor de patchwork que me apeteceu reproduzir. Muito obrigada Noel, um grande abraço.

Castelo Branco

I borrowed these lovely pictures from my daughter. Her grand mother, my mother in law, learned to make Castelo Branco embroidery as a little girl and later on she became a master embroiderer. When this picture was taken, she was sixteen years old and she is the first girl on the left. When they worked on commission on large pieces like bedspreads, it was very common that several women stitched on the same frame to speed up the embroidery and finish it on time.
Standing up was the teacher with a beautiful embroidery behind.
These were different times, different ways of life, so charming and so far away.
A minha filha emprestou-me estas fotografias da avó. A minha sogra aprendeu em menina o bordado de Castelo Branco e tornou-se mais tarde mestra nesta arte. Quando estas fotografias foram tiradas, tinha ela 16 anos. É a primeira da esquerda.
Era habitual, na altura, várias mulheres trabalharem no mesmo bastidor para despachar encomendas demoradas, como colchas ou grandes paineis.
Atrás das alunas, a mestra orientava e verificava o trabalho com o cenário envolvente de uma colcha bordada.
Outros tempos e outros ritmos de viver, que parecem já tão distantes.

Spring

I spent the last weekend at my parent’s. I had a great happy and relaxing time. My mother’s garden was blooming and one of the cats gave birth to a lovely kitten. She is a sweet shy cat so I didn’t want to disturb her, taking photos of her baby. I promise a photo soon.
My mother loves gardening and it is amazing how she grows so many lovely flowers all over the year. Her garden was the best inspiration I could get for this quilt.

Passei o último fim de semana em casa dos meus pais. Foi tempo para estar com eles, descansar e ver a Primavera a crescer à minha volta. O quintal da minha mãe transbordava de flores e uma das gatas teve uma gatinha. A mãe é meiga mas muito tímida e evitei as fotografias que ficarão para breve. A minha mãe continua a ter uma paixão pelas flores e consegue, num clima rude como o do Alentejo, ter um quintal florido e mimoso todo o ano. Que melhor inspiração para este quilt?
This quilt is for the swap coordinated by Emilia and the theme was “flowers”. I chose all the fabrics with printed daisies.
On the appliqué I tried a technique I use to apply when I am making Baltimore. I stuffed the petals with a piece of batting to make it tridimensional. To pop up a little more the appliqué I quilted in the ditch around the flowers.
I am working with a squared plastic frame for hand quilting for the second time. I think this has some advantages against the round hoop I’m used to such as we don’t need to change the frame position as often as we do with a round hoop. Nevertheless I cannot say yet which one I feel more comfortable with.
Este quilt é para o swap coordenado pela Emilia e cujo tema é “flores”. Por isso escolhi todos os tecidos com padrões de margaridas.
Nas aplicações experimentei uma técnica que habitulmente uso nos quilts Baltimore. Usei pedaços de batting da mesma forma das pétalas para as encher e dar-lhe relevo. A linha de quilting a contornar a flor evidencia ainda mais o efeito.
Estou a usar pela segunda vez um bastidor quadrado. Encontro-lhe algumas vantagens em relação ao redondo como por exemplo não ter necessidade de o mudar tantas vezes mas ainda não sei bem qual o que prefiro. O tempo dirá.

For marking quilting straight lines on such busy prints I prefer a taylor's chalk. I know it disappears quickly but I make the marks before the quilt goes into the frame and then I correct the lines as I go. In the end the marks on the fabric brush off easily.

Para marcar as linhas de quilting em tecidos com tantos desenhos prefiro o vulgar giz de alfaiate. Tem o inconveniente de desaparecer rapidamente mas vou corrigindo as linhas à medida que vou quiltando. Em contrapartida, vê-se bem e sai com uma escovadela.

April is almost there and I want to finish some UFOs and swap projects before I start another project I have in mind. I hope I can resist to the temptation of beginning it right now.

Abril está quase aí e agora quero acabar algumas coisas que tenho a meio antes de iniciar um projecto que me anda na cabeça. Vamos ver se resisto à tentação de o começar imediatamente.

Waiting for spring

Last weekend I was not in the classical pieced blocks mood and I felt like making something different. Spring is announcing itself all around so I made a bunch of crazy roses while I’m waiting for the real ones, the flowers I love most.

No último fim de semana não estava muito virada para o patchwork clássico e apeteceu-me fazer uma coisa diferente. Agora que a Primavera se faz anunciar à nossa volta nada melhor que um ramo de rosas em crazy patchwork enquanto vou esperando pelas verdadeiras, as minhas flores preferidas.On the end of last week, a big surprise on the mail box. Joana sent me two lovely pincushions and a bag full of vintage buttons. Thank you so much Joana for your generosity.

No final da última semana uma surpresa na caixa do correio. A Joana enviou-me duas almofadas de alfinetes (que lindas cores) e um saco cheinho de botões antigos (lindos também). Muito obrigada Joana pela tua generosidade e simpatia.

Color

I don’t have a strict ritual about planning a quilt but most of the times I think first about the color scheme. If it is a monochromatic quilt I choose one color that suits the purpose. If I intend to mix colors, I choose a main one and then one or two colors to accessorize it. The next step is to choose fabrics and this is really a pleasure. I take lots of fabrics from the shelves and begin to play the game. I put fabrics, side by side, I see if they are according to plan, if they combine within each other, if there is enough contrast, deepness, or brightness. Prints are important too. I don’t want to lose the sight of a beautiful big print on a small piece of a block. I consider many other aspects depending on the quilt.

Não tendo um ritual estrito no planeamento de um quilt, quase sempre começo por pensar num esquema de cores. Se é um quilt monocromático escolho a cor em função do destino do quilt. Se tenciono misturar cores, escolho a cor principal e depois uma ou duas para complementar. O próximo passo é a parte mais divertida. Retiro os tecidos das prateleiras, e escolho os que se adequam ao esquema, depois coloco-os lado a lado e verifico se combinam efectivamente, se têm contraste suficiente, profundidade, brilho ou qualquer outro aspecto que entenda necessário. Os padrões são também importantes. Peças pequenas podem fazer desaparecer da vista o mais bonito dos padrões e deve haver um equilíbrio entre as dimensões da peça cortada e dos padrões dos tecidos.

This 8” block is the center of a round robin quilt. I intended to make a center block based on cool colors or, as I would rather say, with fresh spring colors. I thought in blue as a main dominant color with splashes of green because they blend perfectly. The block is made of triangles in blue, in green and transitional pieces of green and blue. On the center, I introduced a square of with little blue and yellow flowers. The yellow warms the coolness and allows the next swapper new options.

Este bloco de 8” será o centro de um quilt feito num round robin. Pretendi que o esquema de cores se baseasse em tons frescos de azul e verde sendo o azul a cor dominante e o verde, acessório. Os triângulos são em tons de azul com transições de tecidos em azul e verde. No centro introduzi uma nova cor, o amarelo, para dar mais luz e outras oportunidades às quilters que prosseguirem este quilt.

On a first trial, I chose a light blue for the border pieces. However there was not enough contrast between this blue and the adjacent green.
Very often I have to change my original plans. This time I made another block where I substituted the blue by a white print. The same block looks now very different. To plan too much is not a 100% guarantee of a good result and the good old step-by-step method sometimes can make wonders.

Numa primeira aproximação escolhi um azul claro para todas as peças da periferia do bloco. Mas achei que não havia contraste suficiente e fiz um novo bloco substituindo este tecido por um branco. Dá para perceber que por vezes os planos são reavaliados porque nem sempre são, à partida, garantia de sucesso. O velhinho e empírico método do passo a passo (e volta atrás) dá também bons resultados.

Because this post is about color, look how Kathy put together so wonderfully the pink and the orange on this stunning quilt. Who could ever think this color scheme would turn so amazing? To dare has its own rewards.

Sashiko needlebooks

I love to make small things. Take my time, think carefully each detail, and create new solutions. That’s what happened with these small needle books. First, I chose the theme. Because they are for three different women, I wanted something not very girlish but elegant and feminine and I thought sashiko would accomplish this perfectly. It should be useful and I made an embroidered pocket to carry a pair of scissors, some floss or any other small stuff.

Gosto de fazer coisas pequenas. Com tempo, pensar em cada detalhe e encontrar novas soluções. Foi o que aconteceu com estes livros porta agulhas. Primeiro escolhi o tema. Como são destinados a três mulheres diferentes não queria muitos rococós mas uma coisa bonita, discreta. Pensei que o sashiko preenchesse na mouche este requisito. Deveria ser prático e por por isso adicionei-lhe um bolso bordado para uma tesoura, linhas ou qualquer outro pequeno objecto necessário.

I made straight felt leaves and assembly them with a machine stitch. There is plenty room for lots of needles and pins.

Folhas lisas, unidas por um ponto de máquina com espaço para muitas agulhas e alfinetes.Ribbons and ties are less practical and robust and I preferred a mother of pearl button to close the book.

Fitas e laços não são muito práticas e robustas, por isso a opção de um botão de madre pérola para fechar o livro.

After several trials, finally I made a simple plait loop that matches the sashiko theme.
Depois de várias tentativas pensei nesta solução para a argola de fecho. Uma trança simples em linha mercerizada que combina com o aspecto geral do porta agulhas.

Another scrap quilt

When I review the quilts shown in this blog I realize most of them are made from scraps. You may think I only make scrap quilts but that is not true. In fact, scraps are other quilts leftovers that I have been saving for years and I really have to use them somehow.
Of course, this is time consuming but I seize the opportunity trying new experiences on each scrap quilt I make. It may be a new piecing method, the use of a new batting or just an uncommon color scheme. If the results are not what I would expected I don’t blame myself for wasting my fabric stash.
On this quilt, I made for the first time an invisible binding. I wanted to try it for some time but all the techniques I tried by myself or techniques that I found on books did not please me or were very laborious. Then I saw this wonderful tutorial on Laura’s blog and I knew I had to try it. I love the way the binding folds on the backing. This binding can be made larger or smaller but I think that a width from 1” to 3” is a reasonable size to work with.
This pink binding has 2” width and I thought to be the best color to pop up the backing black and white colors.
The sun was shining today and I could take some photos to show you the results.
Quando revejo os quilts que já mostrei neste blog dou-me conta que a maioria é feita de restos. Poderão pensar que só faço quilts de aproveitamentos mas a verdade é que tenho tantos restos acumulados durante anos que tenho forçosamente de lhes dar um destino. Fazer estes quilts consome muito mais tempo do utilizar tecidos novos. Por isso procuro dar uma maior legitimidade ao gasto desse tempo, fazendo sempre uma nova experiência de cada vez que inicio um quilt destes. Pode ser uma nova técnica de unir os blocos, experimentar um novo batting ou simplesmente arriscar um esquema de cores pouco usual.
Neste quilt fiz pela primeira vez um binding invisível. Há tempos que andava para tentar, mas tudo o que experimentava, ou via em livros, ou não me agradava ou era muito trabalhoso. Mas depois de ver este excelente tutorial soube que iria aplicar esta técnica. Fácil de executar e um resultado que era mesmo o que eu queria. Este binding pode ser mais ou menos largo e penso que será razoável poder oscilar entre os 2,5 e os 7,5 cm.
O cor de rosa que usei não se vê na parte da frente e realça da forma que eu pretendia o preto e branco do backing.
O sol brilhou hoje e tive oportunidade de tirar estas fotografias para vos mostrar os resultados.
PS: torna-se para mim difícil traduzir os muitos dos termos que escrevo relacionados com a técnica de execução e estrutura dos quilts. Já tentei ver noutros blogs, em português, como resolveram a situação mas ainda não vi este problema solucionado. Por isso, aqui fica o link da anatomia de um quilt, para tirar alguma dúvida.

• O meu quilt de Inverno chegou seguro a bom porto, que é como quem diz à casa da May Kristin na Noruega. Foi levado à neve para umas fotos a preceito e não posso deixar de ficar contente pelas amáveis palavras da sua dona.
