labels, swaps and pay it forward

I borrowed this beautiful patchwork from a friend. She got it from another friend and none of them knows the origin of this handwork. When I look at those uncountable tiny squares (1.5”) surrounded by a regular blanket stitch, I cannot help myself of thinking about the woman who made it. Who was she? Why and when did she make it? Was this a charm patchwork or did she make it because she was a frugal woman? The only thing I am sure is that I will get no answers to my questions. This episode remembered me that everyone should be more careful about labeling her crafts. At least labels will help to satisfy someone’s curiosity on the future.
In Lost Quilt Come Home site you can find lots of information how o label your quilts. Labels can be beautiful, simple or plenty of information. Important is to remember to put one on your quilt.

Uma amiga minha emprestou-me este lindo patchwork que uma outra amiga lhe deu mas nenhuma delas sabe a origem deste trabalho. Quando vejo estes inúmeros quadradinhos de (4 cm de lado) rodeados de ponto caseado não posso deixar de pensar na mulher que o fez. Quem seria, porquê e quando o fez? Seria isto um pachwork com recolha de amostras ou simplesmente tratava-se de alguém frugal? A única coisa que sei é que não terei resposta a estas perguntas. Esta situação fez-me lembrar a necessidade de marcar os trabalhos que fazemos, no mínimo ajudaremos a satisfazer a curiosidade de alguém no futuro. No site Lost Quilt Come Home podemos encontrar muita informação sobre como etiquetar um quilt. As etiquetas podem ser simples, bonitas ou cheias de informação. Importante mesmo é não deixarmos de etiquetar os nossos quilts.

Another information, I signed up the four seasons swap (winter). I had participated in the Fall swap, everything run well, Margaret is a wonderful and very organized coordinator and I had a great time.

Outra informação. Vou participar novamente no swap Four Seasons, estação Inverno. Participei no Outono e correu muito bem, a Margaret é uma excelente coordenadora, muito organizada e atenta. Ainda aberto a quem quiser participar.

Filling gaps

A big gap: one whole week without posting, lot of mails to reply and almost four hundred feeds to read. Small gaps: waiting medical appointments, waiting in banks, post offices etc, etc, etc. I fill all those small gaps making my crochet. When my hands are moving, time goes by faster and I mantain my mental sanity. This crochet blanket was started on Easter time and now the squares are ready for assembly. It’s time to think about another project to assure the filling of future gaps.

Um grande hiato: uma semana inteira sem uma postagem, um monte de e-mails por responder e quase quatrocentas entradas para ler. Pequenos hiatos: esperas nos hospitais, bancos, correios e todos aqueles locais onde se espera e espera e espera. Preencho esses tempos fazendo o meu crochet. Quando as mãos estão ocupadas, o tempo passa mais depressa e mantem-se em melhor estado a saúde mental. Esta manta de crochet foi começada pela Páscoa e agora os quadrados estão prontos a ser unidos. past & present

Ver este bordado feito há mais de vinte anos trouxe-me recordações de verões antigos passados no Alentejo. Férias intermináveis, a calma das tardes, sesta, silêncio, a companhia das minhas primas, andar de bicicleta à tardinha. Quando todos dormiam depois de almoço, tinha tempo para mim, para pegar sem pressa no bastidor, nas agulhas e nas linhas e ir por aí fora num descanso que agora não é possível. É por isso que quase sempre os pontos e bons momentos se confundem na minha memória.
Mas voltemos ao presente. O ponto grilhão é um dos meus favoritos porque, sendo simples e rápido, é impressivo e tridimensional. Uma amiga disse-me já não se lembrar de como se fazia o este ponto, chamado por outras bandas de ponto palestrina, o que me fez ir procurar nos arrecadados, por algum esquema elucidativo para lhe dar. Surpresa a minha: não há um ponto grilhão mas sim uma família de pontos deste género. A forma como eu o faço, e penso que a maioria das portuguesas que bordam, é chamado de Reversed Palestrina Stitch pela Sharon. Confirmei no seu blog que este ponto tem mesmo muitos familiares. É só escolher o que mais se gosta.

To see this Christmas tablecloth embroidery, I made more then twenty years ago, brought me back memories from old summer days spent on Alentejo. Holidays, hot, the siesta time, the silence, the company of my cousins, riding a bicycle on the afternoons. When everybody was taking a nap, I used to have my moments with the hoop, my needles and my threads. I realize that happy days and stitches are often related in my memories.
Back to present. Palestrina stitch is one of my favorites. It’s easy, fast to make with impressive tridimensional results. A friend of mine told me she had forgotten how to make it so I looked for comprehensible pictures on my embroidery books. Surprise! There is not just one way to do it. I found at least four Palestrina stitches, they are not the same but all have with a similar look. Sharon calls the way I make Palestrina stitch and most Portuguese embroiderers Reversed Palestrina Stitch. I confirmed in her blog that this stitch has many relatives. We only have to make our choice.

Handle with care

Há três dias entrei no quarto de costura e apeteceu-me voltar para trás. O caos estava instalado. Algum tempo atrás tinha as melhores intenções para este quarto e ainda tenho. Concluí que era a oportunidade que tinha adiado de pôr em prática alguns dos meu projectos. Um deles era dobrar adequadamente os meus tecidos. Para isso segui a técnica da Monica e usei uma régua de 6” por 23” para os dobrar o que me permite fazer três pilhas em cada prateleira.

Three days ago when I entered in my sewing room all I wanted to do is to go back. The chaos was installed with no doubts. Some time ago I had the best intentions for this room and I still have. I realized it was the opportunity to put in action some of my projects. One of them was to fold properly my stash. For that I followed Monica’s technique and I used a 6”by 23”” ruler to fold the fabric. This with allowed me to put three piles side by side on the shelves.A seguir retirei régua e dobrei ainda ao meio para ajustar à profundidade da prateleira. Para tecidos com mais de 2 m esta segunda dobragem não me parece aconselhável porque os fios na dobra podem ficar com demasiada tensão. Para pessoas muito organizadas estas mini peças são sensacionais.
After pull off the ruler I folded again in half to fit the deep of my cabinet. This is fine for fabrics up to 2 yards. For larger fabrics I would not recommended the second fold as it may stress the threads too much. For people really organized these mini bolts are heaven.

Quando chegamos aos pedaços como os fat quarters ou ainda mais pequenos ficamos com uma dor de cabeça. Um dos problemas que encontro quando tento encontrar uma solução para isto é conseguir realmente ver o que tenho.
To organize small pieces of fabric it's a headache. One of the problems is to see exactly what you have and this is not easy when we try to organize pieces like fat quarters or even smaller ones.
Pensei nesta alternativa. Corto um cartão (de caixas de cereais) com medidas adequadas (18 cm) ao recipiente onde vou colocar os tecidos.
I found this an easy solution. I folded the fabric using a cardboard previously cut (7") as you can see on the picture.
Dobro de acordo com a foto e “arquivo-os”. Parece-me funcional.
I pull off the card board and keep them as small files. This really works for me.

Tenho a certeza que a partir de agora e depois desta trabalheira vou ser muito mais cuiddosa quando mexo nestas coisas. E agora o próximo passo. Aproveitei para cortar uma série de ourelas e este foi o resultado: um monte delas a aguardar um destino. Mas isso é uma outra história!
I’m sure, after all this hard work I will be more careful handling my stash. Just a glance to the next step. I took the chance and cut a lot of selvages and now there’s a bunch of it waiting its destiny, but this is another story!

Signs

Projects are blooming or growing like mushrooms all over the blogosphere. Ideas to feed creativity come from everywhere. Autumn is a splendid source of inspiration and most craft bloggers are referring to this sweet season in their posts: the colors, the shapes, the smells, the light, the fruits and the flowers.
Waking up early in the morning is easier because autumn brings a feel of freshness and renewal like no other season does. Fall is not a dormant season and nature is not slowing down. We just have to stay more quite to be able to see its delicate signs.

Prometi a mim mesma que o acabava e cá está ele. Gosto deste quilt por variadas razões mas talvez a mais importante é porque está acabado e para quem é pouco organizado isso representa uma pequena victória. Desta vez não segui aos pressupostos do costume quando faço esta técnica. Em geral uso cores mais outonais, variadas, restos de tecidos na maioria das vezes, e nunca faço um canto enviesado como fiz desta vez. Tentei incialmente fazer o quilt à mão mas as tiras são demasiado estreitas (1/2 “) e as costuras acabam por se sobrepor o que tornava a tarefa penosa e me obrigou optar pela máquina. Agora é mais um cantinho da minha parede que vai ficar composto. Vamos ver o que se segue.

I promised myself to finish it and I did. I like this quilt for several reasons. The first one and probably the most important, because it’s done and for a disorganized person like me this represents a small victory.
I didn’t follow the rules I am used to. Usually I make log cabin with different colors, scraps most of the times, and I never make a mitered border on a log cabin as I did with this. Initially I tried to hand quilted it but the strips are too small (1/2”) and bulky and I decided to make a machine quilting. Now I have another quilt on the wall and already thinking on the next one.

Keep it simple

Quando olho para o calendário apercebo-me como o Natal está próximo. Todos os fins de semana estão já comprometidos, não há já tempo para grandes projectos e não me quero sentir stressada. Em situações como esta páro, permito-me um descanso merecido e faço coisas pequenas e simples. Funciona como um remédio e dá-me energias e criatividade para continuar aqui e no meu trabalho.
Acho sempre graça quando alguém vê os meus quilts ao natural e me dizem que faziam uma ideia completamente diferente do tamanho. Desta vez pus ao lado uns carros de linhas poderem fazer uma estimativa.

When I look to my agenda I realize Christmas is almost here. Every weekend is full, there’s no time for big projects and I don’t want to feel stressed. In times like this I keep it simple making small and easy things and I permit myself to relax. It acts like a medicine and give me more energy and creativity to carry on with my work and my hobby.
It is very funny when people see my quilts on hands and say that they could not imagine, by the picture on the blog, its real size. This time I put on the left side some thread spools to give you an idea.

scissors and needles - part two

Agora que fizemos o modelo em papel vamos à parte divertida que é fazer o porta tesoura. Escolher dois tecidos e um batting fininho (para os quais se podem usar restos) e cortar um rectângulo de cada. O comprimento é o dobro do comprimento do modelo e a largura tem mais 2 a 3 cm.
Now that we made the pattern let’s have some fun sewing the scissors case.
Choose two fabrics and a thin batting (you can use leftovers) and cut a rectangle of each one. The length is twice the length of the pattern and the width is one inch more than the pattern.

Acolchoar as três camadas à máquina. Escolho sempre um padrão simples para estas coisas pequenas.
Quilt the tree layers. I usually choose a simple layout for these small crafts.

Cortar uma das extremidades do rectângulo com o cortador rotativo ou tesoura bem afiada. Fazer um zig-zag á máquina ou ponto equivalente. Isto será o bordo da parte interior.
Cut one of the small edges with a rotary cutter or a sharp fabric scissors. Make a machine zigzag stitch (or some equivalent stitch). This will be the inner edge of the scissors case.

Dobrar o rectângulo como se vê na figura e fazer coincidir a linha do modelo com a linha rematada em zig-zag.
Fold the quilted rectangle as you see in the picture. Put the pattern over it and match the line of the pattern with the stitched edge.

Unir com alfinetes (só um ou dois é suficiente) e cortar as zonas direitas com o cortador rotativo. Deixar 3 mm para a costura. Como não sigo regras muito estritas desta vez não arredondei o fundo como o fiz aqui.
Pin (one or two pins are enough) and cut the straight borders with the rotary cutter and the rounds with a sharp scissor following the pattern. Give 1/8” for seam allowances. I never follow strict rules and this time I did not make a round bottom as I did here.

Retirar o modelo em papel e pôr dois alfinetes para manter a forma. Fazer novamente o ponto de zig-zag á volta do porta tesoura.
Fazer uma casa de botão à mão ou à máquina e já está! Fácil não acham?
Take the pattern away and baste with two or three pins to keep the shape in order.
Make the same machine stitch, you made on the edge, all around the scissors case. Make a hand or machine buttonhole. That’s all. Very easy isn’t it?

A secret quilt

Às vezes não é fácil manter um segredo. Talvez se tenham questionado porque razão não fui mostrando os progressos do meu Four Seasons quilt (outono). Tinha fortes razões para isso. A minha parceira de swap era a Margaret, coordenadora do swap e portanto a única pessoa a conhecer a sua parceira “secreta”. Como podem ver eu não era tão secreta quanto isso e portanto só mostrei aqui uma imagem de uma parte muito pequenina para não lhe estragar a surpresa. Mas hoje ela disse-me que já o tinha recebido e pode por isso ser revelado a todos. Não respeitei as dimensões porque foi um quilt que cresceu por si e ficou um pouco maior que o esperado. O quilting foi feito à mão, em linhas densas que evidenciassem o desenho que imaginei. A Margaret gostou e isso é o mais importante. Agora o próximo round: o quilt Inverno. Já tenho o projecto na cabeça e formigueiros nas mãos.

Sometimes it is not easy to keep a secret. Maybe you have wondered why I didn’t show earlier the four seasons quilt (Fall) I made. I had a strong reason for that. My partner was Margaret, the swap coordinator, and she was the only one to know who her secret partner was. As you can see I was not as secret as that. I only posted a picture of a small part of the top but today Margaret told me she has received the quilt and now everyone can finally see what I did for her. I didn’t respect the dimensions because this quilt grew by itself and I couldn’t make it smaller as I should. I heavy handquilted it to pop up the lines and give the quilt the expression I desired.
Margaret liked it and I am happy that it pleased her. Now the next round: the Winter Season Quilt. I’m anxious to begin it.

scissors and needles

Seria bom podermos fazer, com tudo o que nos pica, o que fazemos com estes utensílios afiados: aconchegá-los em invólucros macios e bonitos. Este é o meu estojo para tesoura e livro de agulhas que uso em viagem.

All the time we have to deal with sharp stuff. I wish I could cover it the same way as I do with my scissors and my needles. Those are my travel scissors case and needle book.

O modelo é simples e aqui vai a receita para o molde do porta tesoura.
Here some pictures how to make the scissors pattern matching the size of your scissors.
Dobrar ao meio uma folha de papel. Colocar a tesoura sobre a dobra e desenhar as linhas como indica a imagem.

Fold in half a sheet of paper. Put the scissors on the folded edge and draw the lines as you see in the picture.

Dobrar de novo pela linha marcada. Cortar com tesoura de papel. Desdobrar.

Fold again by the marked line. Cut with paper scissors. Unfold once.

Completament desdobrado.

You can round the corners if you whish.

Celebrating life

Pensar que o cancro de mama apenas acontece a mulheres de meia idade ou idosas é um mito. Tive alguns sintomas suspeitos e fiz a minha primeira mamografia quando tinha 28 anos. Tudo estava ok e um ano mais tarde nasceu o meu filho mais novo. Ainda hoje tenho de respirar fundo antes de entrar no consultório para fazer o checkup. Mas tenho de o fazer.

To think that only mid-age and old women have breast cancer is a myth. Long ago, I had suspicious symptoms and I took my first mammogram when I was 28. Everything was ok and a year later, my younger son was born. Still now, every time I go to the doctor to make my checkup, I take a deep, deep breath. Isto não é um lembrete nem um conselho. Gostaria só de mostrar a minha solidariedade para uma causa e de ter esperança que as mulheres não se esqueçam de cuidar bem de si próprias.

This is not an advice or a reminder, I just want to express my sympathy for a cause and hope that women don’t forget to take good care of their health.

Recebi o meu quilt do four seasons swap, na sexta feira. A minha parceira, Valerie, não tem blog mas escreveu-me e sei algumas coisas simpáticas ácerca dela: é mãe de um rapazinho de dois anos, pianista em part-time e, como não podia deixar de ser, quilter. Tudo neste quilt foi surpresa para mim. A Margaret, coordenadora do swap pediu a todas as participantes que mencionassem o que gostariam e não gostariam de ver no seu quilt para assim haver uma maior possibilidade de gostarmos do que iriamos receber. Como gosto mesmo de ser surpreendida fui omissa neste ponto. E gosto muito do quilt que a Valerie me fez. Patchwork à máquina com aplicações. Gosto das cores e este mochinho no canto inferior direito é delicioso. Obrigada Valerie. O quilt que fiz para o swap está a caminho dos USA e num próximo post mostrá-lo-ei.

I received the quilt from my partner on Friday. My partner, Valerie, has no blog but she wrote me and I know three nice things about her: she is a mom of a two year-old boy, a part time pianist and of course she is a quilter!
Everything about this quilt was a surprise for me. Margaret, the swap coordinator, asked the participants about their likes and dislikes. That way it should be easier for each one of us to make a quilt that would please our partner. I love surprises so I didn´t make any observation about what should be done in my quilt.
I love the quilt Valerie sent me. It is machine pieced with some appliqué. The colors are great and the little blue owl she appliquéd on the bottom right corner is so cute. Thanks Valerie.
The quilt I made for this swap is on its way to the USA. I'll show it to you soon.

Concordo plenamente com a Jude ácerca do consumismo ligado ao mundo dos trabalhos manuais. Tento restringir ao necessário a compra de revistas, utensílios e toda a parafernália que vocês conhecem tão bem quanto eu. Mas sou fraca quando vejo um tecido de que gosto. E tenho uma paixão por padrões com gatos...

I entirely agree with Jude about the huge consumes in craft world. I try hard to not overspend on magazines, gadgets and all the paraphernalia you know as well as me. But I am a weak woman when I see a beautiful fabric. And I'm crazy about cat prints...E ela também não resiste: Olá rapazes!!

the tortoise and the hare

Dou-me conta que passaram muitos dias e este blog tem estado negligenciado. Nao é que não me lembre dele e de quem o visita mas tenho andado focalizada na execução do quilt para o four seasons swap. Espero assim comportar-me como uma verdadeira tartaruga, devagar e seguramente, para acabar este quilt, até à data aprazada sem ter de fazer uma noitada. Mostro aqui um bocadinho do top antes do quilting. Foi cosido à máquina e tem aplicações e bordado à mão. Agora está no bastidor. Quem faz quilting à mão sabe como esta parte é saborosa.

I know I neglected this blog and I hope you forgive me. I have strong reasons for that. I have been focused on my four seasons quilt for the last week and time is my enemy. I hope to behave like a tortoise, slow and steady, and finish this quilt before the deadline. I’m showing you just a little piece before I quilt it. The top is machine pieced with appliqué and some embroidery and now the sandwich is on the hoop to be hand quilted. All of you hand quilters know how fun this part can be.
