PIF news, an award and the chaos

Some days ago I received the PIF gift I assigned last December. It was send by May Britt from Norway who stitched a lovely quote on this thread bag. She also sent a coordinated sand pincushion attached to the thread bag. It is very practical and it is already set on my sewing machine table. Thank you May Britt.

My last photos are a shame for me. I decided to move my sewing room to another division of my home and I lived the past few days in chaos. And I confess she didn´t help very much.

As duas últimas fotos são uma vergonha mas é o que acontece quando se decide mudar de repente o quarto de costura. Um caos. Ela não ajudou mesmo nada mas controla tudo muito bem.

hand quilting

When I have to wash a hand quilted quilt I take my precautions to take proper care of it. On light fabrics I mark the quilting lines with a water soluble pen but I always wash my quilts even when the lines seem to have disappeared. Most of the times I just gently shake it on a container with tepid water, wish is enough to vanish any chemical residues. Because in Portugal we have sunshine almost all over the year I don´t have a dryer at home. To take off the water excess I spread it on a thick towel, square it and carefully roll this sandwich pressing continuously. This prevents distorting the cotton batting. Then it is time for air drying on a shade place until it is completely dry. Until now this method gave me good results.

Quando tenho de lavar um quilt feito à mão tomo as precauções para preservar o que tanto tempo me levou a fazer. Em tecidos claros como este costumo marcar as linhas com uma caneta azul de tinta solúvel em água. A maioria das vezes basta uma passagem com em água tépida, mergulhando bem todo o quilt para fazer desaparecer todos os resíduos químicos que aí permaneceram. Para retirar o excesso de água, estendo o quilt sobre uma toalha grossa e alinho-o à sua forma original. Depois enrolo esta torta mista pressionando continuamente. Este passo é importante porque a centrifugação pode ser muito drástica e distorcer o batting de algodão. Como em Portugal temos sol quase todo o ano, não tenho em casa secador de roupa. Estendo o quilt à sombra, mas em local arejado para secar rapidamente. até hoje o método deu bons resultados.

This one I was finished some days ago and was made for my hand quilting classes. It has some of the most common quilting patterns (grids, cables and feathered wreaths) and I made it in a buttery color to rest my eyes and fully enjoy the quilt making.

E como é tempo de organizar as minhas aulas para o próximo ano este foi acabado há alguns dias para as aulas de quilting manual. É um pequeno sampler de padrões tradicionais como a coroa, as grelhas e as cordas, e foi feito num tom creme que me descansa a vista e me permite apreciar ainda mais fazer estes pontinhos.

Hearts

You know that I am not an orthodox and I love to make quilts by hand and by machine. But the time consumed to make a handmade quilt can be overwhelming for many, including me. That´s why I never count the hours I spend stitching by hand. One approach to hand stitch is to carry the project whatever we go. Portability is one of the best things about handwork, we don´t need a machine and all the stuff of a quilting studio, just a little bit of organization and a ziplock transparent bag.

Já sabem que não sou ortodoxa e gosto de fazer quilts à mão e á máquina. Mas o tempo consumido num projecto inteiramente manual pode ser inibidor para muitos, inclusive eu. É por isso que não conto o tempo que levo a fazê-los. Uma forma de ultrapassar este inconveniente é andar com a tralha para onde quer que se vá. A portabilidade é uma das coisas boas do fazer à mão, sem necessidade de máquinas e toda a parafernália de um quarto de costura. Apenas um bocadinho de organização e um saco ziplock.

This is what I need to make a hand appliquéd block:
At home I cut all the background fabric and I prepare the hearts to be appliquéd (this last step could also be accomplished in a movable way).

Isto é o que eu preciso para fazer fazer as aplicações:
Em casa corto o tecido base e preparo as formas a aplicar. Este último passo pode também ser feito em “andamento”.

My appliqué portable kit includes the heart shapes (or other), the background fabric block(s), an inexpensive small scissor, a between needle, five appliquéd pins, some thread spools and a thimble and that’s all. I put them in a small transparent ziplock bag and I stitch when I have the opportunity to do it.
O meu kit de appliqué inclui as formas que aplico, o tecido base, uma tesoura pequena e barata (adivinham porquê), uma agulha between, cinco alfinetes de appliqué, alguns carrinhos de linhas e um dedal. Enfio tudo num saco ziplock e dou pontos sempre que tenho uma oportunidade. Momentos aborrecidos de espera, é o que não falta ao longo dos nossos dias.

The cycle is completed

I participated on the Four Seasons Quilt Swap from first round (autumn) and now it is time to end this cycle with the summer quilt. For someone like me that always lived by sea, water is the perfect element to represent summer.

Participei no Four Seasons Quilt Swap desde a primeira volta (Outono) e agora este ciclo chegou ao fim, com o quilt de Verão. Para alguém que como eu sempre viveu junto ao mar, a água é o melhor elemento para simbolizar esta estação.

The background is made of two simple blocks. I distributed the triangles and squares of many shades of blues and greenish blue, from dark to bright, to represent the deep sea and the superficial water. On one side of the quilt a ray of light turns the water in an emerald green.
On the bottom two appliquéd bright fellows walk very calm through the serene water.
A base do quilt é composta de dois blocos simples. Distribuí neles triângulos e quadrados em tonalidades azuis e verde azuladas, do escuro ao claro, que representassem as cores do fundo do oceano e a sua superfície. Ao cimo, um raio de luz torna a água em verde esmeralda.
No fundo, dois peixes vaidosos de cor passeiam calmamente nas águas.For the quilting I used a variegated thread in the colors of the background. The quilting lines follow the movements of the water and the flora under the sea.
Para o quilting usei uma linha matizada a condizer com a cor do fundo e as linhas quiltadas seguem o movimento da água e da flora submarina.
It is good to know that four of my quilts are now in different parts of the world. The autumn quilt is in USA, with Margaret, the winter quilt in Norway with May Kristin, the spring quilt in USA with Colene. And this one is still on this way to the USA. All the quilts were made for different persons but all reflect my personality, the way I play with color and the pleasure I have working with different techniques.
And there are the quilts I received. It is very rewarding to look at them that were kindly made by women from different parts of the world. Soon I will show you how they look so nice all together on my wall.
É bom saber que este quatro quilts estão em diferentes partes do mundo. O de Outono com a Margaret nos USA, o de Inverno com a May Kristin na Noruega, o de Primavera com a Colene nos USA e este atravessou já o Oceano. Todos reflectem um pouco da minha personalidade, da forma como gosto de jogar com a cor e o prazer de trabalhar as técnicas com que os fiz.
E há ainda os quilts recebidos. Este post já vai longo e num próximo vou mostrar como ficam bem, juntos, na minha parede.

Happy endings

Could you imagine that this little quilt has crossed the Atlantic Ocean twice? It did happen. This is the quilt I got from the Spring Fling Round Robin and it was made by four American quilters. Tami made the center, Susan the first border, Carol the second border and Julie made the quilting, the binding and sewed the label. When Julie sent me the quilt, almost two months ago, it was lost for a while and everyone was very upset with that. Margaret is a wonderful and very organized swap hostess and never gives up when something goes wrong because she wants everyone pleased. She asked the ladies to start again another quilt for me. Of course I was very touched with that. But then the quilt was returned to Julie and she sent it to me again. This time it reached my mail box and finally I could see it in my hands.

Imaginem que este pequeno quilt já atravessou o Oceano Atlântico duas vezes. Calhou-me me sorte no Spring Fling Round Robin e foifeito por quatro quilters americanas. A Tami que fez o centro, a Susan, o primeiro border, a Carol, o segundo e a Julie fez o quilting, o binding e coseu a etiqueta. Quando a Julie me enviou o quilt, quase dois meses atrás, andou por aí perdido uns tempos. Trata-se do esforço de uma série de pessoas o que torna a perca ainda mais difícil. A Margaret, que é uma coordenadora fantástica e muito organizada, tratou logo de pedir que me fizessem um novo quilt o que me sensibilizou muito. Mas eis que o quilt regressa aos USA, com o envelope rotulado como morada errada (que não estava). Enviado de novo chegou são e salvo à minha caixa de correio.

The center is a tridimensional flower block in rich purple colors. The borders coordinate wonderfully with center with some new details like the biased stripes of the first border and the tiny corner blocks of the second one. The quilting is perfect for the quilt pattern and Julie added a hang sleeve on the back.

O centro com flores tridimensionais tem tecidos do lilás ao púrpura e os borders coordenam com o centro, mas acrescentam toques pessoais de quem os fez. Como as tiras enviesadas do primeiro border ou os blocos de canto, tão pequenos que nem imagino como os manusearam. O quilting está perfeito para o desenho do patchwork e a Julie teve a paciência de lhe colocar uma manga atrás para o poder pendurar imediatamente.

The beautiful bright batiks were a gentle gift from Julie.
Better late than never and fortunately this time the story had a happy end.

Os tecidos lindos da última foto também foram uma gentileza da Julie.
Mais vale tarde que nunca e desta vez, pelo menos, tudo acabou em bem.

Back in town

I arrived a few days ago but I had a very busy week. Only today I got time to post my holiday photos. Most of the time was spent on the north of the country looking at beautiful houses,

I had a surprise in the mail box. Joana sent me this lovely white button collection sewed on a pastel pink fabric and framed on a hoop. I just have to find the right place to hang it on the wall. Thanks Joana, you are turning me into a button addict. As she knows how I love lace she added a beautiful antique doily. I just love the grayish color of the thread!
I received an award from Méri. I want to thank her for assigning my blog as well for all the encouraging comments on my posts.
Tomorrow I will go on holidays for a few days. This time I tried to be more rational about the craft stuff I will take with me. Most of the times, I make less than 10% of the whole thing.
I will show the pictures of my work (?) and the places I will visit when I come back.
Tive uma surpresa na caixa de correio. A Joana mandou-me uma colecção amorosa de botões brancos, distribuidos num tecido pastel e emoldurados num bastidor de bordar. Agora é só achar um bom lugar na parede para o pendurar. Obrigada por mais este mimo, parece que também vou ficando com o bichinho dos botões. E como sabe que gosto de rendas mandou-me esta, que tem uma cor acinzentada lindíssima diferente da linha que hoje se produz.
Também para a Méri vai um abraço pela gentileza de me ter nomeado para um prémio no seu blog assim como pelos frequentes comentários tão encorajadores.
Amanhã vou de férias por uns curtos dias. Tentei ser mais racional desta vez e não atafulhar as malas com coisas que, à partida sei que não vou fazer. No regresso logo lhes mostro os resultados do trabalho (?) e os lugares que tenciono visitar.

Hoops

Yesterday I receive a comment from Kaká about the square PVC hoop I used to quilt a mini-quilt. I decided to write about the ins and outs of the PVC square hoop because it could help some quilters who intend to buy one. This opinion results from my personal experience and perhaps other quilters have different opinions about the subject.

Advantages

• Portability. I prefer this hoop when I travel because it can be dismantled and it takes little room in my luggage.
• Shape.With a square shape I don´t need to move the quilt so often. It is very good especially for corners and borders.
• Cost. It is cheaper than the hoops made of wood

Disadvantages

• Shape (In this parameter you may consider the two sides of the coin).The distance between the center and the edges of the hoop, changes continuously around the square. This may induce an ergonomic problem mainly with big square hoops.
• It is more difficult for me, to get an even tension on the quilt, when I use this kind of hoop
• It can mark the quilt deeply. We can never forget to remove the quilt from the hoop, overnight.

Ontem recebi um comentário ácerca do bastidor quadrado que usei para fazer o quilting de um mini-quilt. Decidi apontar alguns prós e contras do mesmo, o que talvez ajude quem pretende adquirir um bastidor deste tipo. É uma opinião que resulta da minha experiência. Provavelmente outros poderão ter as mesmas impressões ou não. Como em tudo, os bastidores são uma questão de gosto pessoal.

Vantagens

• Desmontam-se facilmente e podem ir num cantinho da mala. É o que levo quando viajo.
• Forma. Com uma forma quadrada não é necessário mudar tantas vezes o quilt no bastidor. É muito bom para os cantos e as extremidades do quilt.
• É mais barato que os de madeira

Desvantagens

• Forma (e aqui temos dois lados da mesma moeda). A distância do centro à extremidade do quilt varia continuamente à volta do quadrado. Pode trazer problemas de ergonomia sobretudo em bastidores maiores (e braços pequenos).
• É mais díficil conseguir a correcta e homogénea tensão do quilt sobre o bastidor.
• Deixa marcas profundas no quilt se não houver alguns cuidados. Nunca deixo o quilt no bastidor de um dia para o outro (mesmo nos de madeira)

Açores

FIA (International Craft Fair in Lisbon) has been a disappointment for the last two years. I visited it this week and nothing new to report. I don´t mean that we don´t have excellent handcrafters but most of them did not come this year. On the other hand our traditional crafts are not in fashion and don´t sell as well as they should. One of the examples is the crochet made by the ladies from Azores. This lovely lace is still made with whale bone handmade hooks and a very thin thread. This little dolly represents the beautiful hydrangeas that bloom all over the archipelago, especially in São Miguel Island. Each one of these little rosettes can be assembly into table clothes or table runners and they are magnificent. My heart was broken when the lady told me the price. So many hours to make an exquisite and technically perfect work, for a few euros. I believe that tradition should not be static. Changes can be made preserving the technical skills and patterns because evolution is part of men kind. I hope something happens before we lost the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of this handwork.A Feira Internacional do Artesanato continua a ser um desapontamento para mim. Visitei-a há dias e nada de novo a assinalar. Temos bons artesãos, muitos deles envelhecidos e cansados e parte deles, já habituais, não vieram este ano. Por outro lado, algum do nosso artesanato não está na moda, como é o caso da renda de crochet dos Açores, feita ainda com linha muito fina e uma farpa manual de osso de baleia (curiosamente o mesmo nome que se dá à agulha de crochet no Alentejo). Esta roseta pequenina representa as hortênsias que aparecem espontaneamente em quase todo o arquipélago e que é um ex libris de São Miguel. Na generalidade, são unidas umas às outras para toalhas de mesa ou naperons. Fiquei sem palavras quando me disseram o preço. Tantas horas de para fazer um trabalho tão bonito e tecnicamente perfeito, pelo preço da chuva. Não tenho na manga soluções para o problema mas parece-me que passa em parte pela adaptação. A evolução não significa descaracterização mas exige esforço de muitos intervenientes. Esperemos que alguma coisa aconteça para continuarmos a admirar quem tão bem trabalha para enlevo dos nossos olhos.

Capulana

Yesterday a friend of mine visited me and we had a lovely time chatting for a while. Among other things sewing is undoubtedly one of the themes we always talk about. This time she brought me some capulanas that belong to her sister in law and we discuss some possibilities for using them. In its origin, most of the times they are just wrapped around women bodies. But they can be used is so many ways…
Ontem tive a visita inesperada de uma amiga e foi agradável ficarmos um bocado á conversa. Um dos temas invariavelmente tratado é o das costuras. Desta vez ela trouxe-me algumas capulanas de uma cunhada e falámos das possibilidades da sua aplicação. Embora na sua origem sejam quase simplesmente embrulhadas à volta do corpo há tantas formas de as usar…
This reminded me that in the late seventies, after the return of many Portuguese from Mozambique, there were a wide diffusion of these vibrant colored fabrics and at the time I made two simple capulana summer dresses.
Isto lembrou-me que, no fim dos anos setenta e após a descolonização, houve uma difusão das capulanas trazidas pelos Portugueses vindos de Moçambique e eu própria fiz dois vestidos de Verão com elas.
My friend would rather apply these stunning fabrics in a quilt and I think that’s a great idea. Nevertheless, these prints have big shapes and it would be a pity to cut them into pieces. To make a whole clothe quilt with capulanas is a wonderful option! Besides, most of these fabrics are very geometric which allows an easy quilting just following the lines.
A minha amiga prefere e bem usar as capulanas para quilts. No entanto cortar estes magníficos padrões seria desastroso e por isso as capulanas são excelentes para quilts de folha inteira até porque o quilting fica muitissímo facilitado. Basta seguir as linhas dos padrões geométricos. After she went back home I searched my old, old fabrics. I discover a full size capulana (the blue one) and a piece of a capulana dress (the green one) and it made me happy as a child.
Depois dela sair vasculhei as minhas “antiguidades” e descobri uma capulana novinha (a azul) e um pedaço de um vestido (a verde). Claro que fiquei contente como uma criança.

Keep it simple

I must finish several big quilts on the next weeks. Meanwhile, making these two matching mini quilts was so relaxing for my soul and my poor arms.
Nas próximas semanas tenho vários quilts para terminar. Entretanto, foi bom para a alma e para os meus braços cansados, fazer estes dois mini-quilts a combinar.
Then a walk in the park.
E depois um passeio pelo parque.
Life is also made from small simple things.
A vida é também feita de coisas pequenas e simples (talvez na sua maioria).

From Idaho

Today I received the summer quilt from the Four Seasons Quilt Swap. After Autumn, Winter and Spring this is the last quilt of the swap. It was made by Julia and is absolutely gorgeous.
The first thing I thought about this quilt is that this is a smart quilt. Did you notice that the colors Julia chose are not usually associated with summer? Nevertheless, this is indeed a summer quilt! What a clever combination of colors.

Recebi hoje o quilt de Verão do Four Seasons Quilt Swap. Depois do Outono, Inverno e Primavera, este é o último quilt deste swap. Foi feito pela Julia dos Estado Unidos e como podem ver é soberbo.
A primeira coisa que pensei quando o vi é que é um quilt bem pensado. Repararam que as cores não estão vulgarmente associadas a esta estação? No entanto é um quilt que diz “Verão” em cada pedacinho. Que escolha inteligente das cores e padrões!

She worked every detail as you can see on the bunch of flowers and the cute little fellow comfortably waiting for some water drops, on the top of the hat.

Todos os pequenos detalhes foram trabalhados como se pode ver no ramo de flores e no passarinho que espera as gotas de água em cima de um chapéu. She also sent me a delicate lace bookmark she made on her embroidery machine. She is a very talented lady! Thanks so much Julia!
The next and finally step is to send my summer quilt to my partner. I’m working on it.
