Fim de tarde (Sunset)

Finalmente pronto. Já sabem como é. Vão-se interpondo outros projectos em mãos, novas ideias e algumas coisas vão ficando para trás, embora não fiquem esquecidas.
Neste último fim-de-semana acabei o mini-quilt. Foi o meu primeiro trabalho em progresso apresentado no blog e não queria de maneira nenhuma que se transformasse num projecto inacabado.
Finally it’s done. You know how it is. Other WIPs, new ideas and there are always projects staying behind, but not forgoten.
Last weekend I had to finished the mini-quilt. It was my first WIP shown in this blog and I didn’t want it to turn an UFO.

Não está primoroso o quilt à máquina mas o resultado final é razoável.

I’m not very happy with the machine quilting but the overall quilt is quite nice.

Joaninha voa, voa (Fly ladybird, fly)

Tem sido um mês díficil. Muito trabalho, alguma tosse e umas alergias a acompanhar e tempo nenhum para quilts, bordados e outros mimos. Nem tempo sequer para responder aos mails e comentários simpáticos que me vão enviando. Amanhã vou pôr tudo em dia mas antes disso um grande abraço para as todas as quilters do meu webring Taller de Quilting. Sei que passaram um tempo espantoso em Sitges e o meu pensamento esteve lá.

Hoje uma experiência para aplicar no meu próximo projecto. Queria fazer uma joaninha simpática e não encontrei nada sedutor. Pus mãos à obra e saiu este parzinho.

It has been a hard month. Lots of work, cough and allergies and no time for quilts, embroideries and other sweets. I had no time either for answer to e-mails and nice comments sent to me. Tomorrow I will update everything. Meanwhile a big hug for Taller de Quilting webring quilters. I know they spent a good time in Sitges and my thoughts were there.

Today a trial to aplly on my new project. I wanted to make a nice ladybird but I couldn't find anything interesting. I put my hands to work and I made this pair ready to fly.

Caldas da Rainha

Hoje fui às Caldas da Rainha. O meu objectivo específico era visitar a casa Felizardo representante nacional das máquinas de costura Bernina. Graças às preciosas indicações enviadas pela Xina já decidi que máquina de costura vou comprar. De caminho, e como sempre faço quando tenho oportunidade de vir às Caldas, fui ao mercado da fruta. O mercado estava florescente e as bancas de flores foram uma tentação.

Today I went to Caldas da Rainha. The main objectif was to visit Felizardo store, the Bernina retailer in Portugal. Thanks to the precious tips sent by Xina I have just decided which sewing machine I will buy. As I always do when I go to Caldas I took a tour by the fruit market. Não resisti e comprei tomilho e uma variedade de tomilho variegata. E um vaso de ranúnculos para compor o ramalhete.

I didn’t resist and bought a thyme pot and another pot of a variagata thyme specie. And a pot of “ranunculus” just for coloring the spot.

Spring

Apesar do frio parece que a Primavera já se faz anunciar. Achei que era boa altura para fazer alguma coisa mais colorida e já agora aproveitar a prata da casa. Peguei num pequeno rectângulo que bordei há não sei quantos, para experimentar uns quantos pontos, sobre um desenho que não me lembro de onde foi tirado.

Still cold but the days have been bright as a spring announcement. I thought it was a good moment to do something more colorful using some leftovers. I picked up a tiny rectangle, embroidered some years ago as a stitch experiment on a sketch I don’t remember where was taken from.

Juntei-lhe um resto de tecido colorido qb.

I put some bright colored fabric around.

Adicionei-lhe um batting fino, 100% algodão. Pratiquei o meu hand quilting.

I made a sandwich with thin cotton batting. I practiced my hand quilting on it.

Saiu esta almofada requisitada de imediato pela minha filha.
Fiquei contente por ter tido imediatamente um destino útil.

The result was this pillow that was immediately taken by my daughter to be put on her bed.
I feel happy when I make useful things.

Gosto muito de almofadas e não pude deixar de espreitar na internet o que se andava por aí a fazer. Vejam o que encontrei aqui, aqui e aqui.

Square

Quando olho para os meus posts mais antigos, quando olho para os trabalhos que já fiz, não posso deixar de ver tantos quadrados. O que significam? Uma questão de gosto? Falta de irreverência ou de imaginação? Mas depois folheei o The Art Quilt do Robert Shaw e sosseguei. Vi como os quadrados podem ser uma forma criativa e libertadora.

When I see my older posts, when I see other projects I have made I can’t help seeing so many squares. What does it mean? They are there just because I like them? They represent lack of irreverence or imagination?
Then I turned over the pages of The Art Quilt book, from Robert Shaw and I calmed down myself. I saw how squares can be a creative and liberating shape.

"Ouvrages de Dames" revisited

Um dia, há alguns anos, soube da existência deste livro. Persegui-o arduamente e um dia consegui-o. Revisito-o muitas vezes. Às vezes abandono-o por uns tempos mas nunca o esqueço. Por vezes leio-o e leio-o com avidez. A edição é da DMC e data do início do século XX. Da autora, Thérèse de Dillmont, pouco sei. Só aquilo que o livro me diz. Nesta área nunca encontrei um livro tão completo, tão bem escrito, tão bem ilustrado, tão bonito, tão perfeito.

One day, some years ago, I knew this book. I chase it and one day I got it. I revisit it again and again. Some times I abondon it for a while but I never forget it, then I read it over and over again. It is a DMC edition from the beginning of the XX century. I don't know to much about Thérèse de Dillmont, the author. Just what the book tells me.

I never found a craft book so complete, well writed, well ilustrated, so beautiful, so perfect.

Patchwork e bordado (Patchwork and embroidery)

O meu nine patch está a andar. Como disse no post anterior não é um trabalho muito ambicioso mas apeteceu-me fazê-lo pelas cores alegres e vivas.

Hoje quero mostrar uma coisa diferente. Trata-se de um bordado de Castelo Branco. Foi feito pela minha sogra há alguns anos. Ela aprendeu a bordar quando criança e na sua juventude foi uma mestra bordadeira no museu Tavares Proença em Castelo Branco

Today I want to show something different. This is a typical embroidery from Castelo Branco.

It was made by my mother in law some years ago. She learned this technic when she was a child and in her youth she became master and teacher of this embroidery at Tavares Proença museum in Castelo Branco.

É um bordado a seda sobre linho. Alguns dos motivos tipicos usados neste tipo de bordado são os pássaros, os cravos (representando o homem) e as rosas (representando a mulher).

It is made with silk thread on linen. Some of the typical motifs used on this kind of embroidery are birds, carnations (representing the man) and roses (representing the woman).

Novo quilt e outras coisas (New quilt and other things)

Não tenho tecido suficiente para acabar o painel do bules e terei de esperar até sábado para comprar o que me falta. Entretanto apeteceu-me começar um trabalho mais leve e resolvi fazer um top para um quilt, simples em que a cor predominasse. Os tecidos já os comprei há tempos e estava mortinha por estreá-los. Gosto destas cores frescas e já primaveris.
No blog da Fionna encontrei esta belissima ideia de usar tabuleiros para organizar os patches. Coisas simples que resultam.
A propósito de coisas práticas encontrei hoje no flickr este tutorial para fazer uma almofada de agulhas. Das muitas que já vi poucas me agradaram tanto como esta. Já agora vale a pena ver a espetacular colecção de mini-almofadas feitas pela mesma autora.

I don’t have enough fabric to finished the teapots wall hanging backing and binding and I’ll have to wait until Saturday and go to the fabric shop. Meanwhile I felt like making a lighter project. I decided to make a top quilt where the colours should be predominant. The fabrics were already bought and I was very impatient to cut them. I love these vernal and fresh colours.
In Fionna’s blog I found this idea of using a tray to organize the patches. Simple but very useful.
Talking about useful things I found this interesting pincushion tutorial on flickr. It is a tiny little pincushion with very nice details. It is worth while to see this spetacular collection, the most wonderful I ever seen.

Finalmente juntos. Demorei algum tempo na escolha da disposição dos bules e dos patchwork envolvente. A opção é convencional e simples mas parece-me que resulta. Decidi "emoldurar" o bordado numa sequência de quadrados de 2" de tecidos florais entre o vermelho e o beje.

Finally together. I took some time choosing the patchwork layout. This option is quite conventional but i think it works with this project. I decided to frame the teapots in a string of 2" squares of floral reds and beiges.

Está pronto. Foi talvez o mais trabalhoso de todos. O motivo central é bastante pequeno e a linha usada (perlé nº5) um pouco grossa para este motivo. Mas tinha de manter as proporções. Aligeirei um pouco o desenho para manter alguma resolução. O resultado podem vê-lo abaixo.

It's done. Perhaps the most difficult of all but I like the result. The central motif is to tiny and the thread used (perle 5) is somehow a little thick. But I had to mantain the proportions and I turned the sketch lighter to keep some resolution. The result can be seen below.Próximo passo: esquema do patchwork

Detalhes (Details)

Parece impossível como se juntam pedacinhos de tecido. Quadrados, tiras, triângulos, formas irregulares. Várias opções para tratar esses tecidos: juntar, deitar fora, dar, reciclar. Não me agradam as duas primeiras. Se juntamos durante muito tempo na esperança de um dia vir a utilizar corremos o risco de nunca o fazer e essas preciosidades tornam-se tralha. Deitar fora? um desperdício. Dar é uma excelente opção. Uma nova utilização para os “trapinhos” é sempre uma ideia que a mim me atrai. Fiz um novo talego (ou taleiga como alguém já me indicou) de restos de outros quilts anteriores. Um saquinho destes também pode ter alguma personalidade. Coloquei-lhe umas borlas feitas de restinhos de filosele DMC. Às vezes estes detalhes fazem a diferença A “carapuça” é feita em renda de agulha (não confundir com crochet).

It looks impossible how scraps grow and grow. Squares, strips, triangles or irregular shapes. There are several options to deal with is: accumulate, put in the garbage, give to others, re-use it. I don’t like the first two of them. With the first one, scraps quickly became clutter. The second is a waste. To give scraps is a very nice and friendly solution. For me, a re-utilization for old scraps is always an actrative solution.
I make this scrap bag from leftovers of the mini-quilt and some other scrap quilts. Even a simple bag like this can have a nice detail wich gives the work a touch of personality. I don’t know the name of these “little things” in english because it was my mother who teached me how to do it. I have never seen it in books or in the internet. I made them with DMC threads leftovers and the semisphere is made in needle lace.
If someone knows the name in english for this embellishment, inform me. I will be very grateful.

Jardim de Inverno (winter garden)

Dos vários trabalhos em progresso, e que é da praxe mostrar aqui às quartas feiras, escolhi este que, em lume brando, lá vai crescendo conforme a disposição e o tempo.
Neste dia de chuva, e já que os jardins de fora estão frios e molhados, fiquemo-nos pelo menos por estes nossos jardins de interior, sempre confortáveis.

Among several WIPs, we use to show on wednesday, I chose this one. Slowly, step by step, it has been growing as long as free time and the mood allow it. The day was rainny and the gardens out there were cold and wet. But we, quilters, can allways have this kind of interior garden, warm and cosy.

Só falta um bule para completar a série. A dificuldade da escolha é grande e dos muitos bules que tenho escolhi estes três que me parece coordenarem bem com os anteriores. Mas por diferentes razões gosto de todos eles. Do “A” pela forma art-déco, do “B” pela bela textura de superfície, do “C” pela sua exuberante saia de bailarina.
Gostaria que me ajudassem nesta escolha. Até quarta feira contarei os votos em cada um dos bules A, B ou C e quinta feira dir-vos-ei o resultado. Espero que se divirtam tanto com esta escolha como eu me tenho divertido com este projecto.

Only one teapot is missing to complete the series. It is a hard choice now. Among a large number of teapots I chose those three wich I think coordinate well with the others. For diferent reasons I like them all. I like “A” for its interesting art-déco shape, I like “B” for its nice superficial texture, I like “C” for its exuberant ballerina skirt shape.
I would like you to help me with this decision. Until next Wednesday I will wait for your choice (A, B or C) and Thursday I will tell you wich one was the most appreciated. I hope you enjoy this task as much as I did with this project.

Twins/2

O fim desta primeira fase aproxima-se. O quinto bule tem origem praticamente desconhecida. Foi-me oferecido pela Ana que apenas sabe tratar-se de um bule antigo herdado de uma prima. Escolhi-o, como outros anteriores, pela forma, bastante distinta dos que apresentei até aqui. Para o bordado usei ponto pé de flor, ponto atrás, nózinhos e ponto caseado.

E já só falta um!

The fifth teapot has an unknown origin. It was a gift from my friend Ana and she inherited it from a distant old cousin. Basically, I chose it for its original shape. Stem stitch, back stitch, french knot and buttonhole stitch were used for the embroidery.

And now only one is missing!
